Chills. R.I.P. Miriam Makeba.

Y’all know the story about Mbube right? Well Solomon Linda wrote Mbube and became famous in S. Africa off the song. American musicologist Alan Lomax found it and was like, “Yo, we can make some money off this joint!” then passed it along to the Weavers’ who named the song “Wimoweh,” which then got covered by The Tokens, who had the song exclusively re-written for them as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. Meanwhile, Solomon Linda, died during this year in poverty. The song would later be used in the family favorite, “The Lion King”.  While The Walt Disney Company and Abilene music made millions from the recording, Linda’s heirs brought against them a lawsuit for having used the song in the movie and the Broadway stage musical without paying to the family their due royalties. The settlement applied for WORLDWIDE rights, not just those in S. Africa. The money will now go into a trust.
